How to Start Learning BIM?

So how can one start learning BIM? I have prepared an easy step-by-step process that you can develop and implement to get started with learning BIM.

    1. Ensure your computer is compatible
       BIM softwares are very complex and hence demands a minimum hardware specification to operate the software comfortably. You may check the system requirements of the software on google. In summary, you would require a minimum of 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD Storage, and 4GB Graphic Card Memory, but I would recommend you go with 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD Storage and 8GB Graphic Card Memory for the best performance of BIM and other architecture rendering softwares.

      I have recommended a higher specification computer because these softwares get larger and more complex with every upgrade every year so your computer can run smoothly over a longer duration without any hassles.
    2. Install the correct BIM software
       There are several BIM softwares in the market are your disposal such as Revit, ArchiCAD, Vectorworks, Microstation, BIMx, Tekla and many more. It is very confusing and overwhelming for beginners to make a decision on which software to pursue as most students tell me that I know Revit but the firm who has vacancy work with ArchiCAD. What should I do?
      Over the past 10 years, I have understood that the architecture profession is very dynamic in terms of software implementation. At one time, AutoCAD was a primary tool used by all architects and engineers, but today it is no longer the case. Architects who have adopted new systems and skills have overcome their competitors in the industry by giving higher-value services and designs with the help of new emerging tools.
    3. Observe the interface and try some buttons
      The next step is to get familiar with the software so i would recommend that you start creating basic house with four walls, doors, windows, floor slab, roof by clicking on the buttons on the interface panel. This may look very unusual and basic but it plays an important role in building your confidence in using the software.
    4. Watch Youtube videos
      You may then start looking up for youtube videos on how to create floor plans, sections, annotations, sheets, schedules, families, etc. There are many youtube channels that share useful content for free however it is difficult to get customise solution to your specific requirements, issues and challenges through these videos, for instance, your window is not visible on the plan or how to draw a driveway to the basement, or make the drawing look clear and professional.
